Chasing Happiness

"Am I happy?" is a question we don't often answer beyond the superficial. More importantly, we should be asking "What makes me happy?" To be happier in life, we should be spending more time doing those things that make us happy.

Some people believe that you shouldn't wish to be happy, because the wish in itself means that you aren't already. But I do believe in chasing happiness, because if we don't make a conscious decision about where we spend our time and what we do, life passes us by - without leaving much of a trace of positive memories.

So, I'd suggest making a list of what makes you happiest and then, making a conscious effort to do those things more often. Sometimes this means making life-altering decisions. And for some, you may not have the luxury of choosing your happiness over other things. But there are those who are lucky enough to have the option.

I have that option, and yet I've spent my life struggling because I've always thought about 5 years down the line, 10 years down the line, or even to retirement. I haven't spent enough time in the present. I've worked hard today so that I could see a better tomorrow. And now I'm 31 years old; lucky in many ways because of the mantra I believed earlier in life, but empty of many should-be-there memories. I worked hard early on so that I can enjoy tomorrow, and when tomorrow comes, I'm looking at the next tomorrow. I think it's time to slow down and reassess what I want in life. Now is a good time.
